2 Minute Read:
There are several non-surgical treatments available that promote healthier, younger-looking skin. One of the most famous is the so-called “vampire facial,” a procedure that uses a mix of microneedling and platelet-rich plasma treatments to improve the face’s appearance.
What Is Microneedling?
A microneedling procedure is a non-surgical treatment that stimulates collagen production and promotes skin elasticity. It works by using tiny needles in a tight pattern to create a series of microscopic injuries. As these micro-punctures heal, the new tissue develops with a higher level of collagen than the pre-treatment tissues. This results in tougher skin that is more resistant to damage, such as wrinkles, and less prone to sagging.
What Is PRP?
A platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment uses a concentrated platelet solution to speed healing and assist in the regeneration of tissue. This can be used either topically or via injection. In either case, the treatment begins with a certified technician drawing a blood sample from the patient. This is performed using a standard medical needle for drawing blood. No fangs are used when extracting blood.
Once the blood has been drawn, the sample is run through a centrifuge to separate plasma and platelets from red blood cells. The platelets are used as either a topical paste or an injection. When applying the PRP topically, the platelets may have difficulty thoroughly permeating the tissue.
How do Microneedling and PRP Work Together?
When using a microneedling treatment and a PRP treatment together, the skin is improved to a greater degree than either treatment could do individually. By applying PRP topically over micro-abrasions, the growth factor-containing platelets are forced into the abrasions, giving them far more surface areas to regenerate than they could otherwise affect. This increased surface area, coupled with the rapid healing that a microneedling procedure cannot provide, creates a blended procedure that is more effective than the sum of its parts. It may not make you look immortal, but it’s a step in the right direction.
Who Is a Candidate?
Ideal candidates for a vampire facial are non-smokers who want to reduce the appearance of facial blemishes or wrinkles, tighten sagging skin on the face, or reduce the visibility of scars.
Candidates should not take any medications or have any medical conditions that may impede the healing process. People who take blood thinners or have medical conditions that result in thinned blood, such as HIV, should consult with a doctor before scheduling treatment. Vampires interested in treatment are suggested to schedule a nighttime appointment.
