In these modern times, there are many roads to weight loss, including surgery, popular weight-loss drugs, strict diets, general aging, and various lifestyle changes. As much of an accomplishment as it can be, rapid weight loss often comes with frustrating side effects. These include loose, hanging skin and unwanted fat near the midsection, flanks, and buttocks.

Not only does this excess tissue detract from your aesthetic goals, but it can cause physical discomfort and prevent you from enjoying the full benefits of your weight loss.

A body lift is a form of post-weight loss surgery designed to remove excess skin and tighten the skin all around the body, improving the tone and shape of the abdomen, flanks, back, and buttocks.

What Are the Benefits of a Body Lift?

More Noticeable Weight Loss

By removing skin folds and cinching in the silhouette, a patient’s previous weight loss becomes more visible with a body lift. Excess tissues no longer obscure your shape, and your body’s true contours can shine through.

Enhanced Body Contours

A body lift eliminates excess fat and loose skin, resulting in firm and tightened contours. This procedure is custom to the patient’s body and needs, providing a more youthful, slimmer, more toned appearance.

Increased Comfort

Removing loose skin can increase a patient’s day-to-day comfort in many ways. It can make exercise easier and prevent skin chafing and irritation. It can also increase personal comfort by providing relief from rashes and solving hygiene issues caused by excessive skin folds.

Improved Quality of Life

Overall, a body lift has the power to transform a patient’s quality of life. If their surgery included abdominal muscle tightening, this can result in a stronger core and better mobility overall. This can also improve posture and alleviate lower back pain. Additionally, clothes fit better, and patients find themselves with more wardrobe options. Overall, patients enjoy a significant improvement in confidence and quality of life after a body lift.

Do You Have Concerns About Your Body Lift?

Body Lift Recovery

Swelling and bruising are to be expected and will subside after a few weeks. After surgery, the incision sites will be wrapped in bandages, and drainage tubes will be placed if necessary. It’s important to wear your compression garment to minimize swelling and ensure proper healing.

Most patients can return to work after one or two weeks, depending on the intensity of their job. After six weeks, most patients are able to resume the full range of their normal activities. It’s important to follow all post-operative instructions carefully and to attend all follow-up appointments to avoid complications.

Body Lift Cost

Because a body lift is a highly individualized procedure, the total cost of your body lift will depend on the details of your surgical plan. Many factors affect the price of a body lift, including anesthesia fees, facility fees, pre-surgical tests, and post-surgical garments.

During your consultation, Dr. Hochstein can provide you with an accurate cost estimate, and at this time, you can ask any questions you may have about financing and pricing details.

Body Lift Pain

General anesthesia is administered during your body lift to prevent pain during and right after surgery. That said, it’s normal for discomfort to develop in the days following surgery, especially in the areas that were operated on.

Pain can be addressed with prescribed pain medication. Many patients switch to over-the-counter medication for pain after a few days.

Body Lift Scars

The incisions from a body lift will fade over time, though how visible they are will vary from patient to patient because every body heals differently. There are steps you can take to promote scar healing. If you are concerned about scars, ask Dr. Hochstein about available treatments to minimize scarring, such as laser treatments, topical creams and ointments, and silicone strips.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for a Body Lift?

If you are experiencing excess skin that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise, you may be a candidate for a body lift. A good candidate is generally healthy, does not smoke, and has realistic expectations for their results.

It is important that men and women who are considering a body lift are not obese. Individuals with active medical problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease are not candidates for this surgery. Good candidates will have demonstrated a stable weight without fluctuations for at least six months.

What are the potential risks and complications after a Body Lift?

All surgeries come with risks and potential complications. These are rare but can include:

  • Negative reactions to anesthesia
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Tissue necrosis
  • Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots)
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Prolonged bruising and swelling
  • Need for revision surgery
  • Unfavorable scarring

You and your surgeon will discuss these risks prior to your surgery. If you have questions or concerns about risks and complications, be sure to discuss them with your surgeon.

Why do I need to stop smoking before my Body Lift?

Nicotine products interfere with blood circulation, which is essential to safe surgery and a smooth recovery process. Patients who smoke assume a higher risk of complications during and after their Body Lift.

It is recommended patients quit smoking at least two weeks before surgery and continue to not smoke for a minimum of two weeks after their treatment.

Will insurance cover the cost of my Body Lift?

Because plastic surgery is elective, insurance will not cover the cost of your surgery. In an effort to alleviate financial obstacles in the way of many patients’ ability to get the surgery they desire, Dr. Hochstein offers financing options through CareCredit®, ALPHAEON CREDIT®, United Medical Finance, EFinancng Solutions, and Prosper Healthcare Lending.

How long will my results last?

You can expect the results of your body lift to be long-lasting as long as you maintain a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle. It’s natural to lose firmness as your body ages, but you will always look better than if you had never had a body lift as long as you treat your body with care.
