3 Minute Read:
If you have undergone a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) any time in the past and were unhappy with the results, or your body has gone through changes (significant weight fluctuations or childbirth), and you would like to repeat the procedure, you’re not alone.
It’s quite common for circumstances to change over time, and in some cases, the initial surgery provided less-than-ideal results.
Cosmetic Complications That Can Occur With Tummy Tucks
The following issues can sometimes arise after receiving a tummy tuck:
- Unnatural shape or asymmetry – The contours of your abdomen or waist are uneven or don’t have a feminine shape. A revision tummy tuck with a qualified, reputable, and board-certified plastic surgeon can produce the balanced, feminine silhouette you want.
- Your tummy tuck scar is too high – Most skilled cosmetic surgeons take great care to ensure the tummy tuck incisions are expertly sutured (to minimize scarring), and the resulting scar is low enough to be easily concealed by a bikini. However, in some cases, the scar placement is too high, and a simple tummy tuck revision may be able to resolve this issue. A consultation with your qualified plastic surgeon will be able to determine if this procedure will be successful at repositioning the scar.
- Your naval has an unnatural appearance – Usually, in tummy tuck surgery, the belly button must be repositioned. The naval may have been placed too high or low if the surgeon is inexperienced. Other issues include misshapen, lopsided, or an otherwise unsatisfactory appearance. The good news is that this can be corrected without a revision tummy tuck.
- Your procedure has caused “dog ears” to appear – “Dog ears” are protrusions that sometimes occur at each end of your tummy tuck incision (at the hips).
These are often due to the length or placement of the incision but can also be related to skin quality and the healing process.
A revision tummy tuck is not always needed to correct dog ears; instead, the solution may include extending the scar and excising the extended skin. In some cases, residual fat may contribute to dog ears, and liposuction may be used in addition to skin excision.
