How Should I Massage My Breasts After Breast Augmentation?

2 Minute Read:

Are you confident with your breasts? If not, you’re not alone. This insecurity is common among women of all ages, which is why so many women consider a breast augmentation procedure.

A breast augmentation inserts a silicone or saline implant into the breast to increase the size and improve the shape. This is a very safe procedure that is well-tolerated by the body. That being said, your body will create scar tissue around the implant (known as a capsule).

In some cases, this capsule can harden and tighten around the implant, requiring an additional surgical procedure. To help reduce the chance of capsular contracture (and keep your implants feeling soft and natural), you may want to consider breast massage.

So, what is a breast massage, and how should it be done?

Why Should You Massage Your Breasts After Augmentation?

Many women are recommended to massage their breasts after a primary augmentation (meaning your first breast augmentation). Massage is not recommended after a secondary breast augmentation or a breast revision unless specified by your plastic surgeon.

A breast massage after augmentation introduces pressure to the implant from different directions. This helps allow for the relaxation and softening of the scar tissue that develops.

Breast massage is not guaranteed to prevent capsular contracture; however, it is a good practice to help reduce the potential.

When Should You Start Massaging Breasts After a Primary Augmentation?

Breast massages should start fairly early in the recovery process, once your incisions have closed (which can take several days to weeks).

Starting breast massages too soon can interfere with the healing incisions. Be sure to verify your breast augmentation massage timeframe with Dr. Hochstein.

How to Properly Massage the Breasts After an Augmentation

After breast augmentation, your plastic surgeon will provide you with detailed instructions on massaging your breasts. Everyone has unique needs, and your surgeon will instruct you based on the type of implants you choose.

Breast Massage Techniques

  • Pinch the bottom of the breast to move the implant upward. This will help to shift the implant.
  • Repeat this 15 times a day.

Massaging your breast is an essential exercise during breast augmentation surgery recovery as it boosts suppleness, eases discomfort, and reduces the likelihood of painful complications such as capsular contracture. It would help if you started it as soon as you’re comfortable.
