When Should You Consider Gynecomastia Surgery?

Schedule A Consultation

A perfectly sculpted chest is the epitome of masculinity, but many men struggle to achieve the look they desire. Though a healthy diet and targeted workout routines can help, sometimes it’s just not enough. For some men, it’s even harder if their chest has taken on more feminine characteristics. Gynecomastia is the appearance of female breasts in men. Caused by multiple factors, it can be a source of embarrassment. If you’re self-conscious about the appearance of your chest, breast reduction surgery (or gynecomastia surgery), performed by Dr. Hochstein, can restore your masculine chest.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

There are two ways that gynecomastia can present itself. Full gynecomastia is characterized by an excess of glandular tissue in the breasts. This can be caused by multiple factors, including hormones, or drug, steroid, or alcohol abuse. Another presentation of gynecomastia (referred to as pseudogynecomastia) is characterized by excess fat accumulation in the chest. This is caused by a genetic predisposition or an unhealthy lifestyle and poor eating habits. Both forms of gynecomastia can be addressed with breast reduction surgery, though the success of the procedure will depend on your desire and commitment to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after your surgery.

How Will Gynecomastia Surgery Help Me?

There are three options for gynecomastia surgery, and Dr. Hochstein will determine which is most appropriate for your specific anatomy and treatment goals.

  • Liposuction is appropriate for men who have excess fat in their chest. While healthy eating and consistent exercise can help to reduce fat deposits, it’s not usually a fully effective solution. Dr. Hochstein will make small incisions along the chest and insert a microcannula to gently suction out the fat. As he moves the cannula, he is also able to contour the pectoral area, providing you the masculine chest you desire.
  • Excision is effective for men who suffer from excess glandular tissue in the chest. Dr. Hochstein will make discreet incisions on the underside of the breasts and remove the tissue. If necessary, he will remove skin and gently tighten it over the new breast shape.
  • A combination of the two procedures is sometimes necessary. If you are experiencing an extreme amount of fat deposits in your chest, the skin may not be able to tighten against the underlying muscle once liposuction is performed. In these cases, Dr. Hochstein will gently pull the skin and remove any excess.

What Can I Expect After My Gynecomastia Surgery?

Bruising and swelling are common effects of gynecomastia surgery. But a compression garment will be given to you to help minimize both side effects. You will likely be able to return to work and other daily activities within the first week, though strenuous activities should be avoided until cleared by Dr. Hochstein (typically after four weeks). You may experience major swelling for up to two months, but it can take up to six months to see your final results.
